Judith Irvin Hymes, 81, of Chestertown, Md., died on July 21, 2023 at Compass Regional Hospice in Centreville, Md. Born in Blossburg on September 20, 1941, she spent her formative years in Tioga. She is predeceased by her parents, Madeline I. and Raymond J. Hymes, and her sister, Jane H. Schroeder. Judy enjoyed a 50-year career as an academic librarian, retiring in 2014 from Washington College with the title of Associate Professor Emerita. Judy loved books, genealogy, wildlife, all green things, and the Roman Catholic tradition she embraced as a young woman; above all, she loved her family and network of true friends. Survivors include, among many others, a niece and nephew, Stephanie S. Landis (Jim) and Charles E. Schroeder (Deborah), and three cousins, Allison P. Cullen (Michael), Margaret O. Woodside (Sam), and Krista O. Scott (Michael). A funeral Mass was held in Chestertown, Md., on Wednesday, July 26, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A graveside Service of Final Commendation will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 5 at Evergreen Cemetery, 71 Old Keys Road, Tioga, PA, 16946, preceded by a visitation between 9.30 and 10.30 a.m. at Carleton Funeral Home, 11470 Route 6, Wellsboro, PA 16901.
